The associated technologies are also studied such as the artificial intelligence, the perceptual information processing, the signal processing, the data mining, the internet, and the robotics. Students take the core and the extension subjects. For example, the core subjects include Advanced Algorithms, Advanced Computational Intelligence, Advanced Signal Processing, and Advanced Intelligent Robotics, and the extension subjects include Advanced Auditory Information Processing, Advanced Image Recognition, and Advanced System Solution. Additional programs related to the internship, the overseas training, the academic English, and the research ethics enhance students’ intellectual creativity and encourage collaboration with professionals in various fields. Interviews with Students What is important is an attitude of seeking solutions through trial and error. OKAMOTO Tetsu In my third year of undergraduate school, I visited several laboratories at an open campus. At that time, I felt that the themes and research activities themselves looked interesting, and that is what led me to graduate school. Knowing that research is being conducted on a wide range of topics, from technologies used in familiar products to technologies that I had never even heard of before, I felt that I wanted to "experience discovering new facts on a topic that interests me" and "experience new technologies," and I decided to go on to the graduate school. During my undergraduate years, I was a member of the course of Computer, Intelligence and Media Technology in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, where I mainly studied basic computer-related subjects such as mathematics, programming, and algorithms. For my graduation research, I worked on the theme of "research on image feature point detection for 3D restoration of rice and plants" as an introduction to the research I am currently working on in graduate school. There is a method for restoring 3D information from multiple images, and we compared methods and verified their impact on the actual restoration of 3D information for the "image feature point detection," which is important for doing so. Currently, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, I am working on a research project to obtain aerial images of rice paddies using a drone, restore 3D information of rice plants from those images, and use the restored images for evaluation of breeding (variety improvement). Smart agriculture, which utilizes information and communication technology in the agricultural field, is attracting a lot of attention, and I enjoy conducting research because I can contribute to solving problems in different fields. I also had the opportunity to visit a site where a large industrial drone was used to take images, which is an experience that is not possible in everyday classes, and I feel that I was able to experience this exactly because I am working on this research theme. In research, there are many things that no one, including teachers and senior students, has ever done before and for which the answers are unknown. There are many times when you form a hypothesis and actually try it and it doesn't work out the way you want it to, but I feel that it is important to work on it through trial and error and never give up. The advantage of graduate school is that you can spend a lot of time on specialized content. In graduate school, there is a limit to what you can do and what you can achieve in a limited amount of time, but in graduate school, you can pursue your research in two years, and I am glad that my advisor gave me very careful guidance, including feedback on my ideas. However, this also requires a higher degree of independence. There are not so many classes, so you have a lot of time. In addition, you need to think about what you have to do by when in advancing your research, and you need to manage your time well to make it fulfill while gradually accumulating results. While conducting research, I was able to gain experience in analyzing problems that arise and thinking about how to solve them by mobilizing all the knowledge I have. I would like to make use of this experience and apply it to solving various problems after I join in work. ※Interviewed in December 2022.
